Traditional Medical Thermometers

Traditional clinical thermometers – whether alcohol-based or containing gallinstan (a mercury substitute) – are instruments for measuring body temperature whose reliability and accuracy have been established over decades of clinical practice. Although they are gradually being replaced by electronic models in modern medical practices, they still have a place in certain specific contexts.

Clinical Reference Accuracy

The traditional clinical thermometer offers an accuracy of ± 0.1°C, making it the gold standard for measuring basal temperature in gynaecology and for clinical research protocols requiring maximum precision. Rectal measurement remains the gold standard for measuring core temperature in infants and young children. These instruments do not require batteries, are immune to electromagnetic interference and never break down.

Safe alternatives to mercury

Mercury thermometers have been banned in France for medical use since 1999 due to the toxicity of mercury. Gallinstan thermometers (an alloy of gallium, indium and tin) offer thermometric properties identical to those of mercury with zero toxicity in the event of breakage. They are the ideal replacement for practitioners who prefer traditional thermometers with a visible column. Our models comply with the RoHS directive and are free from any hazardous substances.
